Biodiversity is all about understanding Nature and being a part of it. Characterizing biodiversity from ecological, social, economic and cultural viewpoint is an important first step towards policy formulations for sustainable management and use of biodiversity for human well being. This issue has gained more relevance in the contemporary context of rapidly increasing environmental uncertainties, arising from the ecological ‘global change’ (climate change and global warming, land use and cover changes, biodiversity depletion

and biological invasion by exotics) as well as rapidly emerging ‘globalization’ of economies.

Part of a series of primers on biodiversity, this volume looks at its trans-disciplinary dimensions with real-life examples from the rural and tribal traditional ecological knowledge on conserving biodiversity and revering nature through traditional practices, which the modern world is ignoring or trying to modify. The author aims to bring to the knowledge of the readers the benefits of the TEK as used in India even now for conserving biodiversity.
