10 दिसम्बर 1944 को चेन्नई में जन्मी और मुंबई में शिक्षित चित्रा मुद्गल आधुनिक कथा-साहित्य की बहुचर्चित, सम्मानित, और प्रतिनिधि रचनाकार हैं। प्रखर चेतना की संवाहिका चित्रा जी के पास अनुभवों का विपुल भंडार है। उन्होंने समाज के विभिन्न समुदायों, विशेषकर दलित-शोषितों के बीच पैठ कर काम किया है। आंदोलनमुखी संगठनों से इनका गहरा नाता है। इनकी मान्यता है कि सामाजिक परिवर्तनों की दिशा में आंदोलनों की निर्णायक भूमिका है।
