The Nature of Desire

Desire is a fascinating aspect of human experience because it encompasses many dimensions of life. To understand it fully, one must explore its multifaceted nature. Similarly, Kama—the Sanskrit term for desire, longing, pleasure, and passion—possesses a wide range of meanings. It includes sensory enjoyment, emotional attraction, aesthetic appreciation of art and nature, and the wholesome fulfilment of life’s aspirations. Traditionally, Kama has often been viewed with suspicion and, at times, condemned as something inappropriate or morally questionable. However, a deeper examination of its treatment in the Ramcharitmanas and other spiritual scriptures reveals a far more profound significance. These texts analyse the nature and true essence of Kama, demonstrating that it carries deep philosophical and spiritual implications.

If society is viewed as a microcosm of the eternal universe, God remains the ultimate source of creation, while its outward expansion and material manifestation are driven by Kama and its inherent tendencies.

Various schools of thought have examined the attributes and dimensions of Kama. Is it merely a negative emotion? Is it always evil, undesirable, and worthy of condemnation? In the Manas and many other spiritual scriptures, Kama is frequently portrayed in a negative light. Undoubtedly, this represents one aspect of its nature. Yet Kama is also instrumental in the creation, growth, and expansion of the universe. It manifests as a deeply internalised longing for eternal bliss (Ananda), a yearning embedded within the innermost recesses of every human heart. In this sense, it bears witness to humanity’s innate quest for joy and fulfilment.
